Seeing Small Specs or Feeling Rough Texture on Your Paint? That’s Overspray
If you notice tiny colored dots on your paint or feel a rough, sandpaper-like texture when you run your hand across the surface, your vehicle likely has paint overspray. These are small particles of paint that land on your car, usually from nearby construction, painting projects, or wind carrying airborne paint mist.
Overspray often covers the entire vehicle, including the paint, glass, wheels, and trim. It can be frustrating to see and even harder to remove. Overspray must be removed before applying paint protection film, vinyl wrap, or any type of coating to your vehicle.
It is also possible that rough texture or small dots could be other forms of above-surface contamination, which still need proper removal.
Do Not Try to Remove It Yourself
Scrubbing your paint with towels, razor blades, brushes, or harsh tools will not fix the problem. It will only scratch the clear coat and create swirl marks and deeper defects.
We see this all the time. When that happens, the job becomes more complicated because we now have two issues to fix.
First, we have to remove the overspray itself. Sometimes this is simple, and sometimes it is very challenging depending on the paint type and the surface it landed on, such as trim, wheels, glass, or paint. Even with safe removal methods, mild marring can occur, which requires a light polish to correct.
Second, if you aggressively try to remove overspray yourself and create scratches or heavy swirls, we must perform a more extensive paint correction to repair the damage.
Our Overspray Removal Process
Thoroughly wash the vehicle, including wheels, tires, and fender areas
2. Begin removing overspray using the proper tools and products such as a clay bar and adhesive remover
3. Wipe down all treated areas to remove leftover residue
4. Perform a light polish to eliminate any minor marring, swirls, or light scratches
5. Apply a spray wax for added shine and basic protection
6. Dress the tires with a clean, water based, no sling dressing
This process is often enough to restore your paint to its original condition, and in many cases, improve it. If you want to further enhance the overall look of the vehicle, adding a Wash and Wax or a full Paint Correction service will take the finish to the next level.

Paint Overspray FAQ
Do you come to me?
For overspray removal, we require the vehicle to be brought to our shop in Kansas City. Overspray removal is detailed, time consuming work, and the products used perform best in a controlled environment. Heat, sun, and fast-drying chemicals make mobile removal unreliable.
I tried using a clay bar and the overspray is still there. What now?
A clay bar is great for normal above-surface contaminants, and we use it in our Wash and Wax service. However, overspray often bonds too strongly for clay alone. It must be removed with a more precise and patient process. Additional claying will not solve the issue.
Can you remove overspray from plastic, wheels, and glass?
In most cases, yes. We can remove overspray from paint, glass, wheels, trim, and fender areas. However, it is not always possible to remove one hundred percent of the overspray. Some surfaces react differently depending on the type of paint that landed on the vehicle and how long it has been sitting.
Will a rubbing compound remove overspray?
A rubbing compound may remove a very small amount, but it is rarely effective for full overspray removal. Rubbing harder with towels or compounds can add scratches without removing the overspray itself. Proper removal requires the right tools, chemicals, and technique.
